Jennifer Baker

I began my career in radio and have since moved into television and online video.

Best known in Brussels for as well as a fun look at the EU’s week on social media for Euractiv, I also presented weekly programmes from the European institutions for Vieuws.eu for four years. With second-to-none on-air skills, I also regularly provides live coverage of breaking news in Brussels and am called upon as an EU expert by BBC radio, Feature Story News, ETV, NewstalkZB and India Today.

I have been a journalist in print, radio and television for nearly 20 years, the last 8+ specialising in EU policy and legislation in the technology sector — from data protection and privacy to trade agreements; antitrust cases to copyright law; national security to public transparency.

I am originally from Ireland, and after university in Northern Ireland and France, worked in Dublin as a radio journalist.

After a few years, I moved to Malta to pursue my career in print media. It was there, editing a national daily paper and covering the Maltese EU accession process, that I became fascinated with EU politics.

A move to the UK for family reasons, saw me working in the tough, but instructive, British newspaper industry, before moving into trade publications, particularly in the tech sector. I set up my own custom publishing company to capitalise on my experience — Figure8media. It was a difficult time for the publishing industry, but the steep learning curve earned me a lot of transferrable skills, and fortunately the company broke even when I sold one of my own publications on to new owners.

I then moved to Brussels, where my experience and interests really came together. In the last 7 years I have reported on European affairs for Middle Eastern television, British radio and American online media, among many others. I have a wealth of experience in navigating the political quagmire of the EU, as well as an address book packed with insider sources and contacts in Brussels. One of my core skills is translating EU policy-speak into understandable English.

I am passionate about the importance of rigorous reporting to society, and believe that ethical journalism should go hand-in-hand with conviction on human rights issues.

I have written for some of the biggest tech names in the business, ArsTechnica, ComputerWeekly, Macworld, PCworld and CIO (as part of the renowned IDG News Service team), and The Register. I am currently senior presenter on Vieuws.eu and regularly feature as an EU policy and tech expert on BBC radio, FSN, India Today, ETV and others.
